T.W.A.S. #10

This week at school we learned about Inca masks. Incas are the first nations of Peru.  We made ours out of cardboard, gold paint, seeds, string and gems. Gold was a very special thing for the Incas so we made some.

We did a scavenger hunt with the kindergartens and read some Christmas books with them.

In Language Arts we were also making some Christmas comics.  They are about if Santa couldn’t use reindeer what would he use. We also did Christmas pop out cards for our parents.

In math we’ve done basic facts practice each day of the week in school.

Dec 6-11

This week at school we had buddies. First we read Christmas books to our buddies ,    then we did a scavenger hunt looking for Christmas items. In school we are writing Christmas comic strips, the comic strips are about Santa’s reindeer are sick, on strike or on vacation and Santa has to use different animals. In math we did skip counting by 5, 10, 25 and 100 for numbers between 0-1000. This week we started our door decorating, banana is the code word for ELF ON THE SHELF. We think were going to win.

Teacher add-in:
Students were read two sample stories of Santa replacing his reindeer with other animals (“Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?” and “Dinosaur Christmas”.  They brainstormed their own list of animals and why they wouldn’t be able to pull the sleigh.  We then used books from the library (and student’s homes) that showed us how to draw animals step-by-step.  We discussed how our comics would be assessed, focusing on our ideas, conventions (spelling and grammar) and illustrations.  Students are working on their good copies and we are looking forward to sharing these in the future!

This week at school we read a Ukrainian myth. It was cool. The story was called Sirko and the Wolf. The story is about a dog and a wolf. The farmer said he wanted to send the dog into the forest because the dog was too old so he sent him into the forest. The dog was friends with the wolf. The wolf helped the dog. The farmer’s wife had a baby and the wolf tried to steel the baby. The dog saved the baby and the farmer kept the dog because he was a hero. The dog had to do the wolf a favor so the dog fed him and the wolf howled. The end.

In Science we did centers.  There are 7 centers learning about sound and hearing.  There are 3 parts of our ears: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

This week at school we had a puppet show. We made Rajasthani puppets. First, we finished making our puppets. Next, we watched Bollywood dancing. (We also danced to them.) After, we made a dance routine and practiced. Then, we finally had our concert!!!

In math we learned different ways to show one number. Example: the expanded form of 675 is 600+70+5=675.

In Language Arts we learned the 3 “theres”. (There is, also their and they’ re or they are).  We also did “Hamburger Writing” where we wrote our own words about why the animal we researched should or shouldn’t be in the zoo.  We wrote a topic sentence, 3 details or reasons, and a concluding sentence.

Miss Stephanie (our guest teacher) came in again. She talked about glass man. When you have a glass man moment you fight or get upset at the smallest problems.
